Nat Turner Theory 12/22/10
I was studying for the upcoming History Test and was reading about Nat Turner, the slave in Virginia who led a rebellion. Then I noticed something peculiar, the number of white men that the black men killed was 56 people. Then Nat was executed along with 56 other black men. I am wondering if this is just a coincidence that 57 black men were hanged when 56 white men died during the uprising. I think the state was really trying to say "It doesn't matter how many of us you kill, we can still kill more of you." Did the men probobly have something to do with the rebellion? Probably, but I think that there were many more men and the state was just trying to make a point of killing 57 of them, one more than the people who died actually during the fight.

That is a very interesting point, one that I had not considered. In doing a little research after reading your post, I found that while the number of whites killed may have been anywhere from 56 - 65 and the state executed 56 slaves, 100s of innocent slaves may have died as a result of the chaos. Good point by you.
